I Left the house early nice and quiet like

The early sun beamed through at intervals between the buildings

Alternate shadows casting long zebra patterns on the city streets

Pierced by bursts of light

As brightness is amplified through occasional glass fronts

The relative quiet and wild glow gives it a rare beauty

Everyday objects animated into things of interest

Post boxes, buses, amateur graffiti

A familiar sound gradually crystallised in my consciousness

Forever Young. Not often you hear Bob Dylan anymore

Even the more popular stuff

I stared into the shop tasteful wooden textures, obscure fresco

Not my thing to be honest

Before I knew it myself I was sat in the window

New smells and sounds

I ordered a tea and a bacon sandwich

Asking for the fat to be cut off the bacon

She wrote it down with no reply

And walked off

The chef rolled his eyes as she relayed this

Just cut the fat off the bacon mate

Just cut the fat off the bacon mate

Stilled in the moment

Low level chatter blending with sounds of my youth

Light clatter of metal and porcelain

Streets moving slowly outside

Ate my sandwich with small, imperceptible nods

Drank my tea from an unchipped cup

I stayed an hour and thought about nothing

Surprised myself by buying a muffin on the way out

Waved as I left with a smile that I meant

Dropped some coins in the jar and headed off into the day
